History

Intent:

At Camps Hill, our intent is to equip all pupils with a secure understanding of significant people, periods and events from the past, and to help them recognise how these shape the world they live in today. Using the Kapow Primary scheme of work, our curriculum is designed to build pupils’ historical knowledge in a clear, structured and engaging way.

Throughout their time at Camps Hill, children progressively develop a mental timeline of the past, enabling them to understand when different civilisations, events and eras occurred in relation to one another. This chronological understanding provides the foundation for meaningful comparisons, connections and historical reasoning.

Our curriculum ensures that pupils learn about the history of the local area, alongside key aspects of British history and significant events and civilisations from the wider world. These learning opportunities help children appreciate how past societies have influenced modern life and deepen their understanding of cultural and historical diversity.

Kapow’s enquiry-based approach supports pupils in developing the skills needed to ask historically valid questions, challenge and evaluate sources, analyse evidence, and draw thoughtful conclusions. As they progress, children learn to make links between different time periods and other areas of the curriculum, strengthening their ability to think critically and reason historically.

We aim for all children to leave Camps Hill with a lifelong curiosity about the past, confident in using their historical skills to explore how history has shaped, and continues to shape, the present and future. Our curriculum fosters reflective, inquisitive learners who understand the importance of history in their own lives and in the world around them.

Implementation:

  • Our History progression document ensures the children receive a broad and balanced curriculum, focussing on a range of historical areas of learning, including a progression of skills and historical vocabulary (from Reception to Year 6).
  • We use our skills wheels in every lesson (from EYFS to Year 6) to help the children recognise which skills they are using, ensuring that prior skills are built upon.
  • History is taught through investigation and enquiry, where possible, encouraging children to be 'Historians' and looking at the world through the 'Eyes of a Historian'.
  • Our whole school History 'WoW' days and our class 'Wow' days provide active, first hand experiences for our children. This makes History learning both fun and memorable.

How we measure impact:

The National Curriculum has been broken down across Key Stage 1 and 2 to ensure that key skills and knowledge are taught.

At the end of the year, teachers will make judgements about pupil's understanding/application and record these on our assessment system. Pupils will be judged at working towards, at or beyond these age related expectations.
