Personal, Social & Health Education
Intent:
At Camps Hill, our intent is to equip all pupils with the personal, social and emotional skills they need to become confident, resilient and responsible individuals. We aim to develop life‑long learners by instilling positive learning behaviours through our Camps Hill Values, ensuring children are motivated, reflective and ready to embrace challenges.
Our Silver Threads curriculum provides pupils with essential life skills that prepare them for success beyond school. Through practical, meaningful learning experiences, children develop independence, self‑management, teamwork and communication—skills that will support them throughout their education and in their future lives. The teaching of Protective Behaviours supplements the learning of emotional literacy and relational behaviour teachings.
We follow a spiral, progressive whole‑school PSHE scheme that focuses on developing emotional literacy. Pupils learn to understand and manage their emotions, build healthy relationships, make safe choices and recognise the impact of their actions on others. This supports them in becoming positive members of their school and wider community.
Central to our curriculum is the development of a strong sense of belonging. We teach pupils about their role within the school, the local community, the nation and the global community. Through this, they gain a secure understanding of their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the world and learn how they can contribute positively to society.
Our aim is that all children leave Camps Hill with the knowledge, skills and confidence to navigate an ever‑changing world, care for their own wellbeing and play an active, responsible role in their communities.
Implementation:
At Camps Hill, our intent is to nurture pupils who are emotionally literate, resilient and confident members of the community. We place pupil wellbeing at the heart of our curriculum and believe that supporting children’s personal growth is fundamental to their success both in school and throughout their lives.
We teach protective behaviours across the school, ensuring that all pupils understand how to stay safe, recognise their feelings and develop strategies to cope with challenges. Through our Camps Hill Values, we instil positive learning behaviours that enable pupils to become motivated, determined and reflective life‑long learners.
Our Silver Threads curriculum equips children with practical life skills—such as teamwork, communication, problem‑solving and independence—which help them to thrive beyond school. This is complemented by a spiral, progressive whole‑school PSHE scheme that develops emotional literacy and supports pupils in understanding themselves and others.
We adhere to the statutory duties for the teaching of Relationship and Sex education. Please see the policy below. Through wellbeing week and WOW events, we enable children to access experiences they may not otherwise have the opportunity to. We have weekly assemblies across the school and our values are woven through all of our curriculum areas. Children have a voice through our various children’s leadership teasms.
We aim to foster a strong sense of belonging within our school, local community, the nation and the wider world. Pupils learn about their rights and responsibilities as global citizens and develop the empathy, respect and understanding needed to contribute positively to society.
Our goal is for all children to leave Camps Hill with the resilience, self‑belief and personal skills needed to flourish in their future learning and to play an active, responsible role in the world around them.
How we measure impact:
Key skills and knowledge for each year group is published in our PSHCE progression map. At the end of each unit, children are assessed against this criteria.
At the end of each academic year children are assessed as either working towards these age related expectations, working at these expectations, or exceeding them. These are recorded on our whole school tracking system.
Silver threads (life skills for each age range) are identified for all year groups and information is logged to ensure that any gaps can be closed in the next academic year.
